Pythagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician. He founded a religious and scientific secret society, who called themselves the Pythagoreans. They studied and researched mathematical and musical theories covertly, and are responsible for the invention of theories such as the Pythagorean Theorem, and the music note system.
Many people at the time did not understand their theories, and thought they were practicing witchcraft. For that reason, and to not expose anyone to their advanced theories, the Pythagoreans met secretly.

the pentagram

The Pythagoreans symbolized themselves with the five-pointed star, also known as the pentagram. The pentagram was recognized as a symbol of health and knowledge for the ancient Greeks, but others thought of it diabolical.
The star was fundamental in discovering a vast variety of mathematical theories, which are key in our lives today. Pythagoras discovered that inside the pentagram, there was a pentagon to be found. And from that pentagon, you could create another star from the points, and so on. He observed how the pentagram and pentagon were to be found everywhere, in everything, and infinitely.

the golden ratio
Pythagoras generated a theory based off of his encounters with the star, called the golden ratio. The golden ratio = 1.618... and can be found in many objects, such as the pentagram.
The golden ratio creates the golden rectangle, which many Greeks admired for it's wonderful proportions and magic qualities. Every Greek structure that was built contained the golden ratio somewhere in it. The Greeks believed even us humans were proportioned to the golden ratio. The golden ratio and proper proportions used with the pentagram started development and exploration of a deeper understanding of math, and life.
